If you have a relative who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, over the age of 18, you may be eligible to apply for migration under the Family Sponsorship Class. Family members who are currently eligible for sponsorship are:
  • spouses, common-law or conjugal partners 16 years of age or older;
  • parents and grandparents;
  • dependent children, including adopted children*;
  • children under 18 years of age whom you intend to adopt;
  • brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans, under the age of 18 and
  • any other relative if the Canadian sponsor does not have any of the above relatives or family members, either in Canada or abroad.
  • A Spouse or a Common Law Partner can be sponsored by a Canadian resident within Canada.
  • The province of Alberta has recently launched Alberta Family Sponsorship Program. under this program a resident of Alberta can sponsor one relative who meets the specified requirements.
